Correction of sentences is a topic of combination of all the topics of grammar. One has to have knowledge of all the topics of grammar. All the languages have certain rules to be followed by its users. When you say, "I are the master of my life." People will easily find that you must use"am" instead of "are". When you come across the sentences like "We avail the opportunity." but this is wrong. It should be "We avail ourselves of the opportunity." Like this, there are many such sentences we tend to use wrongly. "I was working hard." is right but "I wish I was a king." is wrong. It must be "I wish I were a king." It is through experience of wide reading that we overcome the problem of committing mistakes. Non native speakers or learners of the English language must always have a special focus on the construction and usage of sentences.
Look at two sentences:
- The teacher said that the sun rises in the East.
- The teacher said that the students wanted to write the test.
In the above sentences, the underlined parts of the sentences are the subordinate clauses. "The teacher said" in both the sentences is the main clause. The tense of the main clause in both the sentences is past tense whereas the tenses in subordinate clauses are different. Direct speech of the sentence 1 is: The teacher said, "The sun rises in the East."
Direct speech of sentence 2 is: The teacher said, " The students want to write the test."
The subordinate clauses in both the sentences are in present simple. But when they are converted to indirect speech, the tense of the subordinate clause of sentence 1 is not changed but the tense of the subordinate clause of sentence 2 is changed into past simple. As per grammatical rules, the tense of universal truths is not changed in indirect speech. Like this, there are so many things to be learnt.
Let's look at one more example.
- This book contains eight chapters.
- This book consists of eight chapters.
Both 'contain' and 'consist of' mean the same.
We cannot use 'contain of' and 'consist'.
Anther example:
- I agree with you.
- I agree to his request.
'Agree with' and 'agree to' are right but we should not say "I agree to you." and " I agree with his request." According to the rules, 'agree with' must be used with persons and 'agree to' with requests or proposals.
One more example:
- The guest was invited by Sagar.
- The guest was known to Sandeep.
Both the sentences are in passive voice. In the first sentence, the object Sagar is preceded by "by". In the second sentence, the object Sandeep is preceded by "to". These things must be taken notice of.
What to do to overcome the difficulty? We must use the standard grammar books though they are big and a little difficult to understand. Follow standard English news papers. These days, through and mobile apps, we can read all the standard newspapers of the world. Some news apps will read the papers aloud. Read and read till you have command over the language.
