SPOKEN ENGLISH - SOME SIMPLE AND USEFUL STRUCTURES

Spoken English is the English we speak in our daily life situations. Spoken English is better learnt in the English-speaking atmosphere. Unconscious learning takes place only in the English-speaking world. Some grammatical structures will really help us speak English well. Let’s discuss some of them!


Structure 1

Question Tags: Tags are short questions added at the end of a statement or a command to confirm the action or idea expressed in the statement or command.


Examples:

You are a mechanic, aren’t you?

She is not a student, is she?

Pass me the salt, won’t you?


In the above sentences, aren’t you?, is she?, won’t you?, are question tags. The structure of the Question Tags is as follows:


S+HV+...., HVn’t+S?

S+HV+not+...., HV+S?

V1+..., won’t you?

Structure 2

Short Answers: If the question is yes/no type, short answers/short responses are possible in conversation. One need not say the complete sentence.


Examples:

A: Are you a mechanic?

B: Yes, I am. (I am a mechanic.)


A: Is she playing chess?

B: No, she isn’t. (She is not playing chess.)


A: Have they not got vaccinated?

B: Yes, They have.


In the above sentences, Yes, I am., No, she isn’t., are Short Answers/Short Responses. The structure of the Short Answer is as follows:


Yes,+S+HV.

No,+S+HVn’t./No,+S+HV+not.

Structure 3

Polite Sentences A: When we want to offer something or make a request politely, we must use “would like” in the sentence.


Examples:

A: I would like to speak in English.

B: Would you like to stay with us?


A: She would like some water.

B: He would like to drink some water.


A: Would you like tea?

B: They wouldn’t  like to go out.


The above sentences are polite sentences. The structure of the polite sentences using “would like” is as follows:


S+would like to+V1...

S+would like+N/NP.

S+would not like/wouldn’t like+to+V1...

Structure 4

There is/are...: In the sentences that begin with There…, the helping verb/main verb is determined by the noun that follows.


Examples:

There is a snake in the garden.

There are thirty students in the class.

There was a book on the table.

There lived a tiger in the forest.

Is there a bus to Hyderabad this evening?


Analysis:

“A snake is in the garden.” = “There is a snake in the garden.”


The structure of the above sentences  using “there...” is as follows:


There + HV + N/NP… (There is a snake in the garden.)

There + MV + N/NP…(There lived a tiger in the forest.)

HV + there +HV …? (Is there a bus to Hyderabad this evening?)

Structure 5

It is/was/will be...: “It” is sometimes used as a dummy subject. The real subject is “to+infinitive” . After the helping verb/s comes an adjective.


Examples:

It is good to stay indoors. (To stay indoors is good.)

It was nice to sit in the garden. (To sit in the garden was nice.)


Analysis:

“It is good to stay indoors.” = “ To stay indoors is good.”

“It was nice to sit in the garden.” = “To sit in the garden was nice.”


The structure of the above sentences  using “It...” is as follows:


It + HV + ADJ + TO + V1… (It is good to stay indoors.)

HV + IT + ADJ + TO + V1…? (Is it good to stay indoors?)

        Structure 6

How much+NP/How many+NP: How much (+NP) is used with uncountable nouns and how many (+NP), with countable nouns.


Examples:

How much sugar do you add to your coffee?

How many lessons have you read?


Analysis:

When how much+NP/how many+NP is used as the object of a sentence, the Wh-word is used in the beginning of the sentence and the remaining part of the sentence must be in interrogative form.


The structure of the above sentences  using “how much+NP/how many+NP” is as follows:


How much + NP + Interrogative.  (How much sugar do you add to your coffee?)

How many + NP + Interrogative. (How many lessons have you read?)

Structure 1

Question Tags: Tags à°’à°• Affirmative/Negative sentence or Command à°šివరిà°²ో à°œోà°¡ించబడిà°¨ à°šిà°¨్à°¨ à°ª్à°°à°¶్నలు. Affirmative/Negative sentence or Command à°µ్యక్à°¤ీà°•à°°ించబడిà°¨ à°šà°°్à°¯ à°²ేà°¦ా ఆలోచనను à°¨ిà°°్à°§ాà°°ింà°šà°¡ాà°¨ిà°•ి ఉపయోà°—ింà°šే à°’à°• పదం. 


Examples:

You are a mechanic, aren’t you?

She is not a student, is she?

Pass me the salt, won’t you?
