EXERCISES ON SIMPLE, COMPOUND AND COMPLEX SENTENCES

(Though these kinds of exercises are designed for the students of high school and college students in Telangana, India,they are also very useful for those appearing for competitive examinations. On the whole, they are useful for the aspirants of learning English)

Transform the following sentences (simple into compound and complex, compound into simple and complex, complex into simple and compound).

                                                                             Exercise 1

 I. Convert the following sentences into two other types of sentences.

                                   

  1. The child is too short to touch the board.
  2. The fox is very fat and therefore he cannot enter the cave.
  3. I was so tired that I could not go to work.
  4. Ashwini was too lazy to do homework.
  5. He is very stupid and therefore he cannot give the answer.
  6. The boy is so late that he cannot catch the bus.
  7. I was too busy to speak to them.
  8. You are very innocent and therefore you cannot know this.
  9. He was so old that he could not work well.
  10. She is too poor to educate her son.

 

Exercise 2

 II. Convert the following sentences into two other types of sentences.

                                   

1.      Though he was strong, he was defeated.

2.     In spite of being rich, she did not own a car.

3.     She was intelligent but she did not succeed in life.

4.     In spite of being alone, he was happy.

5.     Though they were late, they attended the meeting.

6.     I was not well but I worked hard.

7.     You are fat but you can run fast.

8.     In spite of being invited, I didn't attend the marriage.

9.     Though he is honest, he is punished.

10.  She was a stranger but she mingled with others easily.

 

Exercise 3

 III. Convert the following sentences into two other types of sentences.

                                   

1.      He was poor but he was honest.

2.     In spite of being strong, he was defeated.

3.     Though they were rich, they led a poor life.

4.     I am alone but I am happy.

5.     Though he was tired, he was awake.

6.     In spite of being doctor, he did not treat the patients.

7.     He was a policeman but he did not catch the thief.

8.     Though Kavya is a singer, she does not sing a song.

9.     In spite being responsible, he does not care about his children.

10.  Though I was present in the class, I didn't listen to the teacher.

 

Exercise 4

 IV. Convert the following sentences into two other types of sentences.

                                   

1.      He worked hard but he failed..

2.     In spite of singing well, she didn't get the prize.

3.     Though they earnt a lot of money, they did not build a house.

4.     Despite knowing the subject well, he didn't give the correct answer.

5.     Although he showed interest, he didn't learn anything.

6.     She was admitted to hospital yet he was not cured.

7.     Notwithstanding his helping her, she failed in the subject.

8.     Even though he attended the classes 

9.     In spite of taking rest, I don't feel relieved.

10.  Although we invited them, they didn't turn up.

 

Exercise 5

 V. Convert the following sentences into two other types of sentences.

                                   

  1. In addition to drawing pictures, she plays the veena.
  2. I write poetry as well as prose.
  3. She not only rides on the bike but also drives the car. 
  4. I respect you as well as him.
  5. Besides buying the ticket, he entered the theatre.
  6. Shyamala sells not only fruits but also vegetables.
  7. Shyam is the correspondent as well as the principal.
  8. In addition to writing a novel, he published it.
  9. The teacher but only taught the lesson but also conducted the test.
  10. Besides cutting the vegetables, mother cooked the curry.

 

Exercise 6

 VI. Convert the following sentences into two other types of sentences.

                                   

  1. If you work hard, you will succeed in life.
  2. He must read the lesson or else he will not answer the questions.
  3. To understand the lesson, listen to the lesson carefully.
  4. Start immediately or you will miss the bus.
  5. Stay home or you will not be safe.
  6. If he takes rest, he will get well.
  7. Don’t smoke or you will spoil your health.
  8. She must pay the fee or else the principal will not allow her to school.
  9. In order not to fail, we must study well.
  10. If he goes out in the rain, he will get wet.

 

Exercise 7

 VII. Convert the following sentences into two other types of sentences.

                                   

  1. If you invite them, they will attend your marriage.
  2. He must think positively or he will face the problems.
  3. To find the pencil, she must search for it.
  4. He must tell the truth or the headmaster will punish him.
  5. Help others to receive help from others.
  6. If he opens the box, he will find the jewellery.
  7. Don’t eat junk food, you will spoil your health.
  8. She must get a job or else she will starve.
  9. In order not to lose marks, you must write the answers neatly.
  10. If he talks too much, he will not be respected.

 

Exercise 8

 VIII. Convert the following sentences into two other types of sentences.

                                   

  1. The phone rang and at once she lifted the receiver.
  2. On opening the door, he saw the letter at the doorstep.
  3. As soon as I met my friend, my joy knew no bounds.
  4. No sooner had the bell rung than the children left school.
  5. On having breakfast, she started for school.
  6. As soon as the teacher came to class, the students stood up.
  7. No sooner had the cab arrived than he got into it.
  8. On the principal’s calling him, Nikhil entered the chamber.
  9. As soon as the parcel arrived, he opened it.
  10. He met with an accident and at once they took him to hospital.

Exercise 9

 VIII. Convert the following sentence into two other types of sentences.

                                   

  1. The authorities opened the gates and at once water gushed out.
  2. On his arriving at the airport, his friends received him warmly.
  3. As soon as the postman came, he asked for the letter.
  4. No sooner had the manager rung the bell than the attender entered the chamber.
  5. On receiving the telegram, the country mouse left for the town.
  6. As soon as somebody knocked at the door, Susrutha opened the door.
  7. No sooner had the mother called the children than they came to her.
  8. On the rescue team’s arriving at the shelter, the victims rushed to them.
  9. As soon as the eagle saw the snake, it caught it.
  10. The girl saw the bakery and at once she asked her mother for ice cream.
