Transform the following sentences

(Simple into compound and complex, compound into simple and complex, complex into simple and compound).

   

Exercise 1

 I. Convert the following sentence into two other types of sentences.

                                   

  1. The child is very short and therefore he cannot touch the board.(Compound)

The child is so short that he cannot touch the board.(Complex)


  1. The fox is too fat to enter the cave. (Simple)

The fox is so fat that he cannot enter the cave. (Complex)


  1. I was too tired to go to work. (Simple)

I was very tired and therefore I could not go to work. (Compound)


  1. Ashwini was very lazy and therefore she could not do homework. (Compound)

Ashwini was so lazy that she could not do homework. (Complex)


  1. He is too stupid to give the answer. (Simple)

He is so stupid that he cannot give the answer. (Complex)


  1. The boy is too late to catch the bus. (Simple)

The boy is very late and therefore he cannot catch the bus. (Compound)


  1. I was very busy and therefore I could not speak to them. (Compound)

I was so busy that I could not speak to them. (Complex)


  1. You are too innocent to know this. (Simple)

You are so innocent that you cannot know this. (Complex)


  1. He was too old to work well. (Simple)

He was very old and therefore he could not work well. (Compound)


  1. She is very poor and therefore she cannot educate her son. (Compound)

She is so poor that she cannot educate her son. (Complex)


 Exercise 2

 II. Convert the following sentence into two other types of sentences.

                                   

1.      In spite of being strong, he was defeated. (Simple)

He was strong but he was defeated. (Compound)

2.      She was rich but she did not own a car. (Compound)

Though she was rich, she did not own a car. (Complex)

3.      Despite being intelligent, she did not succeed in life. (Simple)

Although she was intelligent, she did not succeed in life. (Complex)

4.      He was alone but he was happy. (Compound)

Though he was alone, he was happy. (Complex)

5.      In spite of being late, they attended the meeting. (Simple)

They were late but attended the meeting. (Compound)

6.      Despite being not well, I worked hard. (Simple)

Though I was not well, I worked hard. (Complex)

7.      In spite of being fat, you can run fast. (Simple)

Though you are fat, you can run fast. (Complex)

8.      I was invited but I didn’t attend the marriage. (Compound)

9.      In spite of being honest, he is punished. (Simple)

He is honest but he is punished. (Compound)

10.  In spite of being a stranger, she mingled with others easily. (Simple)
