‘A’ is used before a vowel sound.

Use of the Definite Article

  • The Definite Article is used:

  • Before a  particular person/place/thing:

e.g.:   He is the boy whom I saw at the school.

          Let us go to the picture.

  • Before animals to indicate their class:

     e.g.:   The cow is a useful animal.

          The cat loves comfort.                

  • Before the names of seas, oceans, mountains, certain territories, groups of islands, rivers, lakes, valleys,…etc,.

      e.g.:    the Persian gulf the Godavari

      the Arabian sea the Indian ocean

      the Pacific the Andamans

      the Alps the Punjab

      the USSR the UK

      the USA the Kashmir valley

  • Before the names of holy books, books of historical importance, puranas…etc.

     e.g.:   The Bible The Vedas

  The Quran The Ramayana

  The Mahabharata The Iliad


  • Before things unique of their kinds:

     e.g.:   the sun the sky

    the earth the moon

  • Before proper noun when used with adjective:

     e.g.:   The great Caesar

  • Before superlative degree:

     e.g.:  This is the best pen I have ever seen.

          The darkest cloud has a silver lining.

  • Before the ordinals:

      e.g.: The first, the second,…

               She is the first girl who got the prize.

  • Before musical  instruments:

      e.g.:  He plays the flute.

                She plays the veena.

  • Before  the names of deserts, plains, plateaus, poles:

     e.g.: the Sahara desert.

  The Ganga Sindhu plain.

              The Deccan plateau.

              The North Pole.

  • Before forests, waterfalls, imaginary lines  on earth:

     e.g.: The eternal green forests.

  The Srisailam forest.

  The Niagara waterfall. 

  The equator, the tropic of cancer.

  • Before the names of directions:

     e.g.: the north.

              The south.

  • Before the names of planets, satellites, stars, constellations of stars, asteroids:

     e.g.: The earth. The moon.

             The Germinoids.

  • Before days of importance:

      e.g.: The World Women’s day.

               The Aids day.

  • Before eras of geography:

     e.g.: the Old Stone Age.

  • Before ages of history:

     e.g.:  The Mauryan age.

              The Victorian age.

  • Before battles, wars, pacts and alliances:

     e.g.: The Battle of Panipat, the World War II

             The Poona Pact, the Warsaw Pact.

  • Before movements:

  • Before  hotels, famous restaurants:

     e.g.: The Taj Residency,

  • Before news papers, magazines:

     e.g.: The Hindu, The Spectator.

  • Before monetary units:

     e.g.: The Rupee, The Dollar.

  • Before weapons, army  forces:

     e.g.: The Agni, The Ghori.

  • Before titles, trophies, play grounds, sporting events:

     e.g.: The Padma Bhushan, The Bharat Ratna, The ICC World Cup, 

             The Lords, The Eden Gardens, The Olympics, The Asian 

             Games

  • Before theories and laws:

     e.g.: The Boyle’s Law, The Number Theory.

  • Before deceased species:

     e.g.: The Dinosaurs, The Swan.

  • Before borders:

     e.g.: The Indo-China Border, The North West Frontier.

  • Before abstract nouns indicating particularity:

     e.g.: The joy in his heart is immeasurable.

  • Before adjectives to indicate a class:

     e.g.: The rich are becoming richer.


Use of the Indefinite Article


  • The indefinite article is used:

  • To indicate one:

     e.g.: He bought a pen.

             They constructed a house. 

  • To represent a class:

     e.g.: A dog is a faithful animal.  (a dog = all dogs)

             A cuckoo sings sweetly.  (a cuckoo = all cuckoos)

  • To indicate a  certain person:

     e.g.: A John has come to see you. (a person named John)

  • To indicate price, speed etc.:

      e.g.: Apples are sold at Rs 200/- a dozen.

              She drove the car at eighty kms an hour.

  • To make a proper noun a common noun:

      e.g.: A Daniel has come to judgement. (A Daniel = A person who

              is as great as Daniel)

              A Shelley can write such a poem. (A Shelley = A poet who 

               has the ability of Shelley)

  • In exclamatory sentences:

     e.g.: What an idea!

             What a fine painting!

  • Before ‘few’ and ‘little’ to give positive meaning:

     e.g.: There are a few boys in the class.

  • After many:

     e.g.: Many a politician. (Many politicians)

             Many an hour.  (Many hours)





Omission of Articles


  • The article is omitted:

  • Before proper nouns:

     e.g.: R.K. Narayan is a famous writer.

             I met Anand.

  • Before material nouns:

     e.g.: Iron is a useful metal.

             This ring is made of gold.

  • Before uncountable nouns:

     e.g.: He gave us advice.

             Bread is cheap.

  • Before a common noun when it is used in a general sense:

     e.g.: Man is mortal.

            Religion influences man.

  • Before names of diseases:

     e.g.: She is suffering from typhoid.

             Malaria is not a dangerous disease.

  • Before  names of games:

     e.g.: They are playing hockey.

             Cricket is my favourite game.

  • Before names of languages:

     e.g.: He knows Latin.

             Hindi is spoken in many parts of India.

  • Before nouns in certain phrases:

     e.g.: by air, by sea, to send word, to give ear.

  • Before places like school, college, church, prison, hospital,  market, etc, when visited for primary purpose:

     e.g.: We go to college by bus. (to study)

  They go to church every Sunday. (to pray)

  • Before relations:

     e.g.: Brother has gone.

             Uncle wanted to go.

  • Before  predicate nouns:

     e.g.: He was principal of this college last year.

  • Before colours:

     The colour of my car is green.

  • Before titles used with nouns:

     e.g.: King Asoka fought the Kalinga War.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh met the President.

  • Before God, Heaven, Hell: 

     e.g.: Pray to God.

  • Before names of meals:

     e.g.: Lunch is very tasty today.

             Dinner is ready.

  • Before countable plural nouns:

          e.g.: She bought apples.

             He ate bananas.

  • Before mountain peaks:

     e.g.: Everest is the highest peak.
